History

History

Take a look at the history of Helmore Stewart.

George Helmore was just 24 years old when he moved from Christchurch to Rangiora in 1884 to set up his new law practice. There were other lawyers in the town but by 1891 they had departed, leaving George with the borough to himself – literally, one might say, as the Rangiora Borough Council became a client in 1855, starting a relationship that was to endure for more than a century.

George Helmore also began the long tradition of the firm actively supporting community activities. At once a superb athlete and deeply religious, he was involved in rugby (played for New Zealand in 1884), cricket (for Canterbury 1880-1888), tennis and rifle shooting clubs. In 1912 he moved back to Christchurch to run the branch office.

Harry van Asch was left in charge of the Rangiora office. Harry took a partnership in the firm in 1906, which became Helmore & van Asch. A nephew of Harry’s, Arthur, joined the firm just before WWII and was a partner until 1971, by which time the firm had severed its ties with Christchurch. In 1966, an amicable separation had seen the Christchurch partners go their own way, and the Rangiora partners, Arthur, Ted Smith (another colossus in the local community) and Richard Bowron formed Helmore Smith van Asch & Bowron. Christchurch solicitor Richard Bowron had joined Helmore van Asch & Walton in 1954, being admitted as a partner the following year.

George Scott became a partner in 1967. George too, was an athlete, being a New Zealand Universities and Canterbury representative. George retired in March 2012.

Lindsay Martin became a partner in 1976. Keith Hales became a partner in 1978. Around this time, the firm became known as Helmore Bowron & Scott.

Dorothy Stewart joined the partnership in 1999.

Lindsay retired in 2011. Keith retired in 2014.

Craig Knowles and Aaron Milnes joined the partnership in 2013.

Having secured some younger partners, the firm is well positioned to continue to serve the North Canterbury Community and beyond.
